About this artwork

Ribbed domes crowd the lower half of the canvas, their curved surfaces divided by fine radiating lines and capped with slender finials in pale gold, each topped by a crescent. Behind them, tall minarets rise in softer tones, with further domes and towers receding into a blue haze that dissolves the upper edge of the composition. The palette is held within shades of teal, turquoise and deep indigo, lightened here and there by touches of pale pink. The surface is worked in layers, with rectangular blocks of colour set against scraped and scumbled passages that break the architecture into faceted planes. The work is signed and dated at the lower right.

Selewam describes her inspiration as a deep love for Islamic architecture, in particular the graceful domes and elegant minarets of mosques. Working in blues and turquoises, she seeks to convey the spiritual serenity, beauty and timeless harmony that these forms evoke in her. The painting moves between recognisable imagery and abstraction, so that the skyline appears at once as a place and as a field of colour, seen through the quiet of twilight.

About the artist

Nadia Selewam is an Egyptian artist and Professor of Haematology at Cairo University. Her medical training has shaped her attention to detail and structure, and her appreciation of the beauty of creation, which she brings to her work as a painter.

She works primarily in oil and acrylic, drawing on abstract impressionism and cubism. Colour, texture and expressive brushwork carry her paintings, which combine layered surfaces with a dynamic interplay of colour and form. Nature is her principal source of inspiration, and she approaches it through a range of artistic styles.

Her practice moves between abstraction and recognisable imagery, allowing each painting to develop its own visual language. The works are open to personal interpretation and seek to establish an emotional connection with the viewer.
