About this artwork

A column of corrugated cardboard rises through the centre of the composition and serves as the vase, from which fine white stems branch upward and to the left into clusters of drawn leaves. The same leaf forms recur against two dark fields of black paper, one at the upper centre and one at the lower left. Around them the surface is assembled from torn pages of printed text, strips of black and white striped paper, and passages of grey, blue and terracotta paint. Two small pencil drawings are set into the white ground, one an angular sketch of a wheeled form, the other a figure enclosed in an oval. Rows of white dots, circles and crosses, scattered red marks and thin red lines run across the whole, and the work is signed and dated at the lower right.

The pages incorporated into the collage include a legible title page and lines of verse from a printed edition of a play, identifiable as Dryden’s All for Love, whose scene of Egyptian priests appears among the fragments. Amin made the work during the Covid lockdown, a period in which she painted what surrounded her at home. The vase, an object of the domestic interior, becomes the organising axis of a composition in which the everyday, the literary and the handmade are held together on a single surface.

About the artist

Heba Amin is an Egyptian visual artist whose work draws on a childhood and youth spent across Russia, Germany, Nigeria, and Brazil, and on early years of visiting museums around the world with her parents. The varied landscapes and cultures of these places remain a lasting source of inspiration.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the American University in Cairo in 1988, after which she began independent studies in painting and drawing. In 2000 she took part in her first group exhibition, the fourth annual salon of small art works, where she received the Salon prize.

Drawn to contemporary abstraction, Amin continues to find inspiration in nature and travel. Her abstract paintings address landscape, still life, portraiture, and above all the female figure, her central interest.
