About this artwork

A bust is set against a dark, near black ground, the head built from broad planes of terracotta, rust and burnt orange. The features are reduced to a few marks: two small black dots, a short black line and a band of dark horizontal strokes at the mouth. The central face is lighter, a pale orange oval whose skin is broken into a dense web of cracks, while a darker plum brown form to the right carries a single point of white. A fine yellow line traces the contour of the head and shoulders, and the figure rests on a lower field of mottled green, flecked with cream and with a small dark green wedge at the collar. The ground itself is thickly worked and fissured.

The reduced features and the worn, crazed surface give the head the quality of an excavated or weathered object, present yet withheld. Amin presents the work as one of several portraits from her solo exhibition The Other Person, which considers the figure who stands so close that their presence becomes a mirror, at times comforting, at times unbearable, whether a relative, a friend, or a shadow of the self. Here the near silent face suggests someone who knows our hidden stories, our unspoken fears and our fragile dreams, and whose nearness strips away the masks we wear for the world.

About the artist

Heba Amin is an Egyptian visual artist whose work draws on a childhood and youth spent across Russia, Germany, Nigeria, and Brazil, and on early years of visiting museums around the world with her parents. The varied landscapes and cultures of these places remain a lasting source of inspiration.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the American University in Cairo in 1988, after which she began independent studies in painting and drawing. In 2000 she took part in her first group exhibition, the fourth annual salon of small art works, where she received the Salon prize.

Drawn to contemporary abstraction, Amin continues to find inspiration in nature and travel. Her abstract paintings address landscape, still life, portraiture, and above all the female figure, her central interest.
