About this artwork

Two robed figures flank a massive, densely textured mound of hay, its actual straw and fiber worked directly into the surface, rising against a flat gold ground that gives the labor depicted an almost iconic, gilded weight. At their feet, coils of rope and rumpled green fabric spill across the lower edge of the composition, the same hand worked, tactile material extending the photographic figures into something closer to physical object than image.

Abou El Naga's fusion of photograph, fabric, and actual hay fiber enacts the very labor it documents, the work's own construction, stitched, layered, hand assembled, as effortful and material as the task of carrying and stacking hay itself. The gold ground, more often reserved for icons or manuscript illumination, elevates this ordinary agricultural labor to the same visual register, dignity granted not through narrative but through the sheer handcraft invested in the surface itself.
