About this artwork

A slender vase of pale grey blue, its surface marked with soft dark spots, stands on a band of black and white striped paper threaded with fine red lines. From its neck rise stems drawn in white line, ending in small round buds and opening into four leaves cut from paper: one grey with orange and blue drops, one marbled in blue and cream, and one printed with Arabic newspaper text overlaid with black strokes and touches of red. Behind them, broad black brushstrokes cross a warm, pale peach ground, forming a heavy, angular shape that holds the arrangement in place. A small dotted dome and a single thin line hanging from the shelf complete the composition. The work is signed and dated at the lower right.

Amin made the piece during the Covid lockdown, a period in which she painted what surrounded her at home. A domestic subject, flowers in a vase, is rebuilt from found and cut materials, with printed text, patterned paper and drawn line joined to areas of bold painted black. The result is a still life in which the familiar object is held between description and abstraction.

About the artist

Heba Amin is an Egyptian visual artist whose work draws on a childhood and youth spent across Russia, Germany, Nigeria, and Brazil, and on early years of visiting museums around the world with her parents. The varied landscapes and cultures of these places remain a lasting source of inspiration.

She received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the American University in Cairo in 1988, after which she began independent studies in painting and drawing. In 2000 she took part in her first group exhibition, the fourth annual salon of small art works, where she received the Salon prize.

Drawn to contemporary abstraction, Amin continues to find inspiration in nature and travel. Her abstract paintings address landscape, still life, portraiture, and above all the female figure, her central interest.
