About this artwork

A lone sailboat, its single white sail a narrow triangle, rests on a lake enclosed by mountains. The peaks are constructed from angular, faceted planes in green, olive, ochre and grey blue, the highest catching a warm yellow light against a pale, graduated sky. The water is built from the same vocabulary, its surface broken into shifting planes of teal and cobalt that grow larger and bluer towards the foreground. Beneath the boat, the reflection of the sail splinters into a vertical chain of white shards, while the mountains mirror themselves in darker brown and green on the left. The work is signed in Arabic at the lower right.

Selewam reimagines a tranquil seascape through geometric form and a rich range of blue, brown and green. The lone sailboat and its fragmented reflection create a sense of solitude and stillness, and bring nature and cubism into a single harmony. The fragmentation of the water gives the work its title, as the surface itself is scattered into pieces while the scene remains calm.

About the artist

Nadia Selewam is an Egyptian artist and Professor of Haematology at Cairo University. Her medical training has shaped her attention to detail and structure, and her appreciation of the beauty of creation, which she brings to her work as a painter.

She works primarily in oil and acrylic, drawing on abstract impressionism and cubism. Colour, texture and expressive brushwork carry her paintings, which combine layered surfaces with a dynamic interplay of colour and form. Nature is her principal source of inspiration, and she approaches it through a range of artistic styles.

Her practice moves between abstraction and recognisable imagery, allowing each painting to develop its own visual language. The works are open to personal interpretation and seek to establish an emotional connection with the viewer.
